Our Top Energy-Saving Tips For Your Home or Business

top energy tips for home and business

If you’ve been watching the news, then you’ll probably have heard about the rise in gas and electricity bills. With the rise of energy bills, we’re here to share our ‘Top Energy-saving Tips for your Home or Business’.

As countries begin to recover from the pandemic, demand for gas has started to increase. This demand couldn’t be met due to the supply and demand from gas and electricity suppliers from around the world. This problem was then made worse by renewable sources like wind and solar producing less power. The cold weather during the winter months also forced more people to turn their heating up.

UK Households are now seeing a steep increase in their gas and electricity prices this winter. The increase, due to supply and demand, is now being passed onto the consumer. On 3 February 2022, Ofgem announced the Default Tariff Cap will rise by 54% from 1 April 2022

Whilst the prices are set to increase further, it’s predicted that the number of UK Households who struggle to heat their home will rise from 4 million to 6 million.

To help you keep your energy costs down, we’ve created 10 energy-saving tips that can be applied to your home or business.

How To Reduce Energy Costs

1. Turn the lights off when leaving a room.

Our first energy-saving tip is to create a habit of making sure you always turn the lights off when leaving the room. You can save a great amount of money by doing this regularly.

2. Switch to LED Lighting wherever possible.

Many homes in the UK are now switching to LED Lights where possible. This is because they look more stylish but more importantly, they are much cheaper to run and more energy-efficient than Halogen Bulbs.

3. Switch to energy-efficient appliances.

Washing Machines / Dryers and Refrigerators use the most energy in the Home. Replacing these with more efficient modes can cut your electricity usage by half, therefore reducing your electricity bills.

4. Unplug devices when not in use.

This one may be stating the obvious but if you don’t do it, it can cost you a lot of money. It’s as simple as unplugging all devices when not in use. This means that you shouldn’t leave devices on standby and only plug devices in when necessary.

5. Keep your thermostat at low temperatures during the day.

Keeping your thermostat to around 17 degrees will make a big difference and save you lots of money on your energy bills.

6. Reduce water consumption.

Reducing how much water you use will not only reduce your water rates but your gas/electricity bills (depending on your water access type). Next time, why not consider taking quicker showers, washing clothes & dishes when you have a full wash, turning off taps when brushing your teeth and so on?

7. Use smart devices to identify your gas & electricity usage.

Smart devices can be set to run for certain periods and even on schedules to reduce energy usage. For example, you can use smart plugs to control electrical appliances and even smart radiator valves to control your central heating.

8. If possible, switch to double glazing.

Double-glazed doors and windows are a modern way to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from heating and cooling, and therefore, reduce your energy bills and carbon footprint.

9. Wash your clothes at colder temperatures.

When washing your clothes, why not consider washing at a cooler temperature and with a full load?

10. Use solar-powered devices.

We’re now in 2023, which means… a lot of electronic devices now have a solar-powered version! By no means will you be able to switch over everything, but, small changes will make a big difference in your energy bills.

Conclusion

Hopefully after reading our energy-saving tips you can reduce some of your household or business energy costs. Although the amount per appliance may seem minor, all the small savings can certainly add up each month.
